ZuneLatest.NET
ZuneLatest.NET is a free application for generating Zune playlists based on recently added music. The utility allows you to break down the playlists by artist, album, purchased, subscribed and personal (CD-rips etc).
I LOVE my Zune Pass, currently Microsoft offers a free 14 day trial for anyone who hasn't previously tried it and I can't recommend it enough. It's the easiest way of exploring new music and enjoying old favourites.
This program was developed because I was getting frustrated that I could spend my evening on Marketplace using Mixview but then get to work the following day and have no idea which albums / artists / songs I had actually downloaded yesterday! This application is my solution.
The current version only supports music, podcasts and videos will follow in later releases.
Instructions
Download the zip from here and run the executable!
First time you run the application it will prompt you for your music and zune directories. Assuming you have left these on default you shouldn't have to do anything.
From the main screen select what sort of music you want to search for, and how to organise the playlists. Then hit go! The defaults are pretty sensible, so you can just hit go and see what happens!
Limitations
There are a number of limitations to the current release (0.4.0) of ZuneLatest.NET
- No podcast support - Sadly there is no podcast playlist support in this build. The code is all there, but the UI has been disabled because the Zune software does not recognise the generated playlists when podcasts are included. I hope to resolve this soon.
- Music not always accurate - The internal Zune database is not easily accessible to external applications so my program scans the file system for information. This can lead to inaccurate playlists. Usually in the shape of 'new' music actually being old music which has been modified. Sometimes it will also confuse subscription and purchased music.
- Slow on large collections - Due to using the filesystem to collect information the application is relatively slow compared to the nippy Zune application. Until the ZuneStore.sdf can be directly queried there is not much I can do about this.
- Doesn't pick up single files - If a single file is added to an existing personal music collection it is not picked up as 'new music'. This is a speed trade-off.
Hopefully some / all of these will be addressed by a future release, or taken on by the core Zune software.
